Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Back to Basics TEM500 Egg-and-Muffin 2-Slice Toaster and Egg Poacher

Customer Review: Water with Care!
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow, with over 300 reviews, there's not much more to say under the sun than, "GET IT!!!" I bought this a few years ago, and have not regretted it. I do love the gadgets, so I might be biased. My one recommendation is to write "2-3 tablespoons H20" near the device. More than that added to the toaster and your egg will be gummy. Less water and you will experience upon first bite, SEERING HOT egg yolk on your face. NO lie! The chicken gods must have been conspiring against me. Really, get this appliance; you won't be sorry you did.

Customer Review: toaster

This is a great product. Start it before I jump in the shower and I have a hot breakfast waiting on me when I get out. I may never have to eat a breakfast bar again.

Customer Review: Worked Great for about 8 months
Summary: 2 Stars

Loved this item for the 8 months it worked. Was not overused by any means, maybe once every week or two. Then it just would no longer cook the egg. So, take it for what it is. I found out you can make the same breakfast sandwiches pretty easily using a small frypan. (Can even do two at once)

Customer Review: Ingenious Device
Summary: 5 Stars

The Back to Basics is an excellent value, and is actually a very functional kitchen gadget that will get more use than your food processor! I am surprised it doesn't have an infomercial.

Some of the other reviewers wrote about the quality of the small appliance, which is in fact part plastic. That was our only concern in purchasing this toaster/breakfast sandwich maker. However; it does everything that it is supposed to do. And we enjoy using it one or two times each morning to make a to-go breakfast for our commutes.

The system properly cooks meat and eggs, ending with perfectly toasted bread. Cooking time is adjusted by the amount of water used. We find that the suggested guidelines work just fine. We have done a little experimenting with the meat in particular. It is great for sausage and Canadian Bacon.

How long will it last? I would say that a year or two is reasonable for the quality/price. I am not saying that it is cheaply made, just that it is not as heavy duty as some of the more expensive brands. When compared to getting a breakfast sandwich or two at about $3-$4 each, it paid for itself in about two weeks.

For the money, we find it to be an ingenious device, and a great value that makes getting out the door easy and efficient.

Customer Review: AWESOME....then it will break.
Summary: 2 Stars

I really enjoyed this product... while it lasted. Sadly the old adage "you get what you pay for" applies. It lasted for 7 glorious egg mc muffin-like months THEN it just stopped working. The warranty had expired and I could no longer enjoy the egg goodness. I thought it was unusual and possibly a fluke but after some research I found out that this products failure is quite common. I contacted the company to no avail they did/would not reply. SO in conclusion, great idea, terrible implementation. Oh and USE NON-STICK SPRAY! The low price clearly does not allow for teflon.
