Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Pinzon Santoku Knives and Bamboo Cutting Board Set

Customer Review: Inconsistent quality
Summary: 2 Stars

I've had terrific experiences with other Pinzon products. I own the Pakka wood knife set and the french press. Both are great products and I'd recommend them to anyone. But this, I cannot recommend.

The cutting board is bamboo and it's nice. The drawer is convenient, but it takes some effort to slide. Without rubber feet to secure the board on the counter, opening is a two-hand affair. It locks into the closed position to prevent accidental drawer opening during transport.

The knives are a tremendous disappointment! They LOOK a lot like those expensive brands like the much-loved Global often seen on Iron Chef and other Food Network programs. The steel feels cheap. It doesn't have the deep lustre of my other trusty Pinzon knives. The blade is thin. In fact, the cheapness & thinness give it the feel of a box-cutter blade. The handle is hollow. That makes the product feel even cheaper. The knives have no heft. They're THE lightest knives (for this size) that I've ever handled.

What deepens my disppointment is that I bought two of these as gifts for my grandmothers. I guess, looking on the bright side, the lighter weight will be easier for them to control. And maybe the edge will hold better than I expect, though without an included honing steel, I really don't think that'll happen.

But I really shouldn't complain too much. After all, it DID say hollow handles & stamped blade in the description. So I give it 2 stars. Not the worst rating but still not something I recommend.

UPDATE: Both my grandmothers claim they love these knives for the lightweight and razor sharpness. I can't be sure if they're just saying that or if they mean it.

Customer Review: Incredible Knife value
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this as a gift. What a value! I would pay more for the cutting board alone. I don't know how they can sell this set for this price. My daughter was delighted and the knives are great.

Customer Review: Knife review
Summary: 5 Stars

The two knives in this set are magnificent for the price. Could not be bettered in the value for money stakes. They are as sharp as a Judge's death sentence, beautifully balanced and quite lovely to look at. It is rare indeed for a product to look so good yet perform so well.

The cutting board/knife drawer is a gimmick of little use. Far better to do what we did, put the magnificent knives on a magnetic holder on the wall. Then forget about the drawer and just use the cutting board as such.

Customer Review: Lovely!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this set for $15 and after having received this cutting board set I wished I had ordered many more! I conditioned the bamboo with Mahoney's Walnut utility oil followed by his oil wax finish which conditions and protects beautifully and are non-toxic unlike mineral oil. The small knife is sharper than the large knife in my set, but both are well balanced and strong.

Customer Review: Mine is great
Summary: 5 Stars

I missed this when it was the lightning deal for $14.99, so when it went back down to $19.99 I snagged it. Yes, the drawer sticks a tiny bit, but this product is great! The knives are light, but they slice quite well. I'm using the drawer as a smaller, more portable cutting board, so I ended up with two very nice bamboo cutting boards and two knives. I've purchased other Pinzon products I liked, and I'm very glad I picked up this one as well.
