Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Aerobie 80R08 AeroPress Coffee and Espresso MakerCustomer Review: A great cup of coffee Summary: 5 Stars
This ingenious device makes coffee as good as you get in the coffee shop. Really!
I've put the Aeropress in a carrying bag that I bought separately and I take it with me on trips. It is very popular on Boy Scout camping trips - we heat the water over a backpack stove and test the temperature with a little cooking thermometer that I bought for $5 and make a fine cup of joe in the middle of the woods. It has made me popular among other scouting dads.
I make coffee in the office and usually get a couple of spectators. I've made a few converts this way. Everyone is intrigued at the device and then surprised at the results.
I highly recommend this smart and fun coffee maker.
Customer Review: A great way to make coffee Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this because of the good reviews and I have not been disappointed. Previously I brewed my coffee by French press. I roast my beans.
I like the taste of the coffee I prepare this way. I like the easy clean-up. I like the speed. I like the economy.
The instructions are specific to one way of making coffee. I followed them the first time but have chosen a different way since. They suggest twice the coffee-to-water ratio I had been using. Someone said this is definitely not espresso -- I do not know whether it is, but it was a good cup of high-power coffee.
Now I use the same ratio as with the French press. I was careful the first time to use water at their 175 deg. temperature. Now I simply boil water, pour it into a Pyrex cup to cool it a bit, then immediately add it to the press. The cool glass cools the water enough. After I press the coffee, I add the remainder of the (pre-measured) water to the cup and I am ready to go.
I make a half-gallon of coffee once a week by pressing a larger amount of coffee and adding water as appropriate, and that works fine, too.
I bought extra filters, not knowing whether any were included. It came with 350 filters, and they are reusable. I have used one filter for two weeks or longer and cannot tell any difference compared to a fresh filter. The original 350 filters should last me years!
I would recommend you give this method a try. The cost is not great and, for me, the results are superior.
Customer Review: A lot of control, really smooth coffee, not espresso and not in 30 seconds. Summary: 4 Stars
There is a lot of hype in the advertisements for this product.
You have a lot of control. Of course you could always grind your coffee however you like but without a filter (such as a French press), or a filter that gets easily clogged (such as a drip coffee maker) it has it's limitations. But in this case you can grind it however you like the taste. I'd go for fine. You can use water whatever temperature you like (I like it boiling). You can let it steep for a while (although it will eventually drip through the filter unless you use as much ground coffee as I do), and you can add as much ground coffee as you like (within the limits of the volume of the maker but you can do that with any maker anyway). By varying these factors you can control a lot more of how your coffee turns out.
No matter what I do it turns out smooth. Almost too smooth for me, but many people will love the smoothness. I miss the bitterness and the taste of the cream it took to mellow it.
But no matter how you cut it espresso has a very specific definition and this does not make espresso. Espresso involves boiling water, more pressure and no paper filters. This is neither a good nor a bad thing, it's just the facts. It is much more mellow than Espresso.
It also takes much more than 30 seconds to make your coffee with this. Even starting from the coffee already ground and the water already hot, it takes more than 30 seconds. I'm not complaining, just pointing out reality.
Still it's my favorite coffee maker for traveling or work as the cleanup is simple and I only need somewhere to microwave the water and a cup to make it in (and of course the coffee maker and filters). It's much easier to clean up than a French press and I can grind the coffee much finer (espresso grind) than the French press and end up with stronger coffee.
I have two: one for travel and one for work.
Customer Review: A must for any coffee snob's arsenal Summary: 4 Stars
The coffee one makes in this pot is superior to the coffee made from traditional espresso machines and moka/stovetop espresso machines. Even my first (and thus experimental) cup made from the aeropress was amazing. As an added bonus, the aeropress is super easy to clean - just press the coffee out of the bottom, and rinse it out. Plus its made of a very durable material. I've dropped mine several times and nary a scratch. If you're looking to take a chance on this coffee maker, you will not be disappointed.

this is a great alternative to a french press. it takes a little getting used to, but produces a great cup of expresso/coffee.
