I specifically wanted a bedside lamp with a full range dimmer and the halogen floor lamps seem to be the only option. This type of lamp was also the only floor lamp with the on/off switch low enough that I can reach up from bed to turn it off. The lamp does what I wanted/needed it to do: full range dimmer, doesn't take up any bedside table room, switch reachable from bed, etc. So on those fronts, the lamp is good. Oh, and the lamp I received doesn't crackle or hum at the lower dimmer settings like previous lamps I've owned, so that's a plus, too. The bad news is that the lamp I received was dented at the base (a small dent, but dented all the same). I don't know if it was refurbished, but it definitely was not well cared for. I didn't experience any paint chipping or other flaws until I tried to put it together. The threads on the individual shaft pieces are so poorly made that at least twice I screwed them together incorrectly. And since the materials are somewhat malleable, it was next to impossible to get them back apart without pliers. In my attempts I ended up scraping some paint. I finally did get it together correctly without stripping the threads. It's no fashion statement to be sure, but I decided to keep it. The materials and construction are not of good quality, but the lamp (at least the lamp I got) does function electrically and mechanically as I needed it to operate.
